Aubrey E. Wray, 76, of Jarratt, passed away Thursday, October 7, 2021. He was the son of the late William S. and Helen F. Wray and was also preceded in death by his brother, Morris G. Wray.

A lifelong Greensville County tobacco farmer, Aubrey was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing and enjoyed playing softball and later coaching.

Aubrey is survived by his wife of 56 years, Dolly R. Wray; two sons, Gregory D. Wray (Linda) and Christopher C. Wray (Torri), daughter, Courtney W. Gordon (Brian T.); five grandchildren, Michaela West (Ronnie), Cody Wray (Victoria), Collin and Marshall Wray and Mason Gordon; and a great-granddaughter, Evelyn West.

The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, October 11 at Owen Funeral Home, 303 S. Halifax Rd., Jarratt, Virginia.

A private committal service will immediately follow.

Timothy A. “Tim” Gainey, 53, passed away Friday, October 1, 2021. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mckenzie Cherie Gainey and his father, Gene Gainey. 

Tim is survived by two daughters, Allison G. Lynch (Kurt) and Logan Gainey; two sons, Timothy A. Gainey, Jr. (Joslyn Smith) and John Lee Lewis Gainey; two grandchildren, Kynlee and Oaklen Lynch; his mother, Joan M. Gainey; two brothers, Tony Gainey (Pam) and Mark Gainey (Marsha). 

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, October 8, 2021 at Owen Funeral Home, 303 S. Halifax RD, Jarratt, Virginia. The family will receive friends at Tim’s home immediately following the service.

Lorene Ferguson, passed away peacefully in her home on September 24th, 2021. She was 93 years old. Lorene was well-loved in the small town of Jarratt, VA. She was a devoted friend of God, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and knew no strangers. She was greeted in heaven by her beloved husband of 62 years, Ernest Ferguson, her son, Keith Ferguson, her grandson, Chuck Kasper, precious puppy dog Romie, and many beloved family members. Lorene was wonderfully devoted to her children Ernest Wayne (Diane), Brenda Turner, and Keith Ferguson (deceased). She was a beloved Granny and leaves behind six grandchildren; Ryan Ferguson, Lauren Youell (Blanton), Jaime Trevillian, Matthew Turner, Kelsey Dunn (Michael) and Rob Turner as well as six great-grandchildren; Maddie, Claire, Jaxson, Jamison, Jenevieve and Eli. She is survived by her sister Dale Jones and sister-in-law Annie Laurie Jones, and many nieces and nephews.

She was a devoted and longtime member of Calvary Baptist Church. Her passion for traveling was fulfilled when she met some of her best friends at the Senior Circle from Southern Virginia Regional Hospital. She signed up for almost every trip and volunteered to send out the newsletter.

Lorene had a compassionate spirit whose passion was caring for and protecting others. She was a Sheriff's Deputy for Greensville County from 1977 until her retirement in 1990. In her 13 years of service, Lorene qualified as a sharpshooter. A heart of gold, outside of work Lorene was always making delicious dinners and desserts for her loved ones. Her famous chicken and dumplings recipe will forever be cherished.

She was often making baked goods for her Friday night line dancing at the Chattahoochee Country Club. So devoted to making each dance that she had her own reserved table and became an honorary member of the band. The Country Club gave Lorene many good memories and friendships, including her darling, David Zitta. Lorene danced until the very end.

The family would like to thank her caretakers Jill Bryant, Vicky Conwell, and Angie Smith from the hospice workers of Kindred Hospice.

A celebration of life will be held at 5pm on October 9th at the Chattahoochee Country Club, 138 Roanoke Rapids Road Gaston NC. Pastor Andy Cain will lead us in scripture reading and prayer. In her loving memory, family will present eulogies. Lorene's favorite things consisted of line dancing and eating good food. Please join us in honoring Lorene by doing her favorite things and sharing memories.

Jeremy Bradforde “Brad” Wilson, 42, of Emporia, passed away Wednesday, September 22, 2021. He was preceded in death by his father, Kenny Wilson and grandparents, Lawrence and Lucy Wilson and Burton Edward Grizzard.
Brad is survived by his wife, Tina Wilson; son, Joseph Joyner; mother, Elizabeth “Liz” Grizzard; maternal grandmother, Joanne B. Grizzard and his canine companion, Sophie “Beardo”.

Carolyn Moss Fajna peacefully went to be with the Lord at her home on September 3, 2021 at the age of 81. She was born on April 28, 1940 in Barley, Va., to the late Peter Russell and Essie Pollard Moss. She is preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, John Ludwig Fajna and her grandson, Mason Bayne Taylor. She is also preceded in death by her elder brother Clyde Acey Moss and elder sister Page Moss Marable. She leaves behind her daughters, Denise Barnes (Collins), Trina Taylor (Mike); sons, J. Ludwig Fajna Jr, Timothy Fajna (Jill), Dathan Fajna (Heather); eleven grandchildren Edward Barnes (Sara), Joshua Barnes (Jennifer), Ethan Barnes (Kaitlyn), Jeremy Barnes, Chelsea Taylor (Steven), Michael Taylor (Samantha), Caroline Taylor (Kameron), Sarah Paige Fajna, Joseph Fajna, Madison Fajna (Hunter), and Ian Fajna; the six Barnes great-grandchildren, Lilian, Connor, Olivia, Cooper, Henry, and Emma; and several nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind her faithful companions Spot, Penny, Milo, Lizzy, and Roadie. She was a lifelong member of St John Lutheran Church where she served as choir director for multiple years. She worked closely with her husband on the farm till he retired and worked at Farm Bureau for 15 years. The funeral service, led by Pastor Stephen Bocklage, was held 11 a.m. Monday, September 6 at St. John the Baptist Lutheran Church. Interment at the church cemetery. Earl Wayne Gillam, 69, of Jarratt, Virginia left for his eternal home on Tuesday, July 27, 2021. A loving son, husband, father, and grandfather, he leaves his family behind to cherish his memory and continue his legacy of love. Preceded in death by his father, James Lewis Gillam, mother, Mabel Lewis Gillam, and brother David Gillam, Wayne is survived by his devoted wife of 44 years Connie Winfield Gillam, daughter Carol Gillam Glanville (Peter), son Steven Wayne Gillam (Lisa) and two grandchildren, Nikolas and Addison Gillam. Wayne also leaves behind three sisters, Dianne Gillam, Judy Matthews, and Martha Gillam and one brother, Curtis Gillam. Wayne dedicated his life to serving others and taking care of his family and friends.

Visitation will be held 5-8 p.m. Saturday, July 31 at Owen Funeral Home, 303 S. Halifax Rd., Jarratt, where the funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, August 1. Interment will follow at High Hills Memorial Cemetery.

Mrs. Martha Purnell Byrd, 84, of Emporia, passed away Monday, June 7, 2021. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry F. Byrd and brothers, Jerry Martin Purnell, Swanson Purnell and Ira Poteat Purnell.

Mrs. Byrd was a member of Faith Baptist Church. She had a strong work ethic and had worked at Dan River Mills in Danville before settling in Emporia where she worked at several jobs before using her home as a base for a thrift store selling home furnishings.

Mrs. Byrd is survived by her son, Harry F. Byrd, Jr. (Tane Watson Byrd); grandson, William “Will” Watson Byrd; brothers, John Allen Purnell of San Antonio, TX, Ollie Keith Purnell (Emily) of Roxboro, NC, Ricky Gwynn Purnell of Elgin, SC, and Pete Preston Purnell of Blanche, NC; sister, Clara Jean Purnell of Tight Squeeze, VA and numerous nieces and nephews.

Wayne R. Croshaw, Sr., 82, of Stony Creek, passed away Friday, May 28, 2021. He was the son of the late Walter and Ada Croshaw and was also preceded in death by two sisters, Freida Bobbitt and Brenda Johnson.

Mr. Croshaw retired from Firestone Corporation in Hopewell and was an avid fisherman and enjoyed working at growing his fruit trees.

Mr. George L. Hill, 84, of Emporia, passed away Friday, May 28, 2021. Mr. Hill was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sarah Jane Tomlinson Hill.

He was a retired insurance agent with Life and Casualty Insurance and a U.S. Army veteran. He was a member of Zion Baptist Church and also was a greeter at Wal-Mart where he enjoyed interacting with former customers and meeting new friends.

Mr. Hill is survived by two daughters, Janice Paige Millias (Jacob) and Rebecca K. Edleman (Jack); grandchildren, Megan Miller (Ryan), Katherine Colson (Nick), Sarah Millias (Michael), Michael Cruz (Manny) and Tabitha Bailey (D. J.); great-grandchildren, Evelyn and Cullen Colson, Eldon Miller, Scarlett and Skylar Tracy, Kaylin Harper, Tyree Harper, Carter Bailey, Amber Bailey, Jack Edleman, Jr., Scott Edleman and Brock Edleman; and great-grandson, Warren Edleman. Judith R. Smith, 72, of Emporia, passed away Thursday, April 22, 2021. She was preceded in death by her husband, Woodie Smith and a son, Brian Keith Anderton.

Mrs. Smith spent her career as a Registered Nurse at Avis B. Adams Convalescent Center for nearly 40 years. She loved all animals and was most fond of the many cats she cared for at her home.

Mrs. Smith is survived by her son, Michael “Tony” Anderton (Brandy); sister, Marilyn Riggan and brother, Kenneth Riggan (Kathy).

Gary Wayne Davis, Sr., 69, of Skippers, passed away Monday, April 19, 2021. He had recently retired after 21 years’ service with the Virginia Department of Corrections. He was preceded in death by his father, Emmett and stepfather, Jack.

Gary Wayne is survived by his wife, Denise M. Davis; daughters, Tracy Sison (Thiery) and Tanya D. Clary (Al) and son, G.W. Davis, Jr. (Megan); four grandchildren, Jonathan & Anna Sison and Hannah & Luca Davis; his mother, Rose Phillips; sister, Glenda D. Creath (David); his beloved canine companion, Spanky and numerous nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind a large extended family and the many friends made in the ball community and in the time he spent hunting and fishing.

Sylvia Cullins Morris, 86, of Emporia, Virginia, passed away Wednesday, April14, 2021. She worked for Continental, GTE and Verizon phone companies and for 25 years as switchboard operator at SVRMC. She enjoyed her time spent as a member of the Red Hat Society.

Mrs. Morris was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Clayton Morris; her parents, Ella Johnson Cullins and John Cullins; also four sisters and a very dear sister-in-law.

Mary Carroll Lipscomb, 83, of Jarratt, widow of Charles Lipscomb, passed away Wednesday, March 10, 2021. She was the daughter of the late William and Eva Mae Catlett and was also preceded in death by one son, Marvin Carroll and her former husband, Herbert Lee Carroll; brother, Jimmy and sisters, Mattie and Glenda.

Mrs. Lipscomb is survived by two sons, Mike Carroll (Kathy) and Robert Carroll (Lisa); daughter, Renee’ Moore (Keith) and daughter-in-law, Debra Carroll (Jim); grandchildren, Michelle Carroll, Christopher Moore, Robert “Patton” Carroll (Michelle), Kayla Tisdale (Adam), Bryan Moore, Andrew Tisdale and Blake Carroll (Felicia); eleven great-grandchildren; brother, Gene Catlett and sister, Joyce Plott and a number of nieces and nephews.

She is also survived by three step-children, Ron Lipscomb (Debbie), Theresa Meyers (Steven) and Rickey Lipscomb (Renee’) and their families.

The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, March 13 at Owen Funeral Home, 303 S. Halifax Rd, Jarratt, Virginia where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will be private.

Cyran Lee “P Y” Wong, 67, passed away Wednesday, February 24, 2021. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ah-Ching Wong and Sally and Franklin Grizzard and by a brother, Franklin F. Grizzard, Jr.

P Y is survived by devoted companion, Laura Torgeson; two daughters, Kapunahele Wong (Richard Spears) and Jennifer Wong-Chapman (Christopher); son, Jason Wong; three grandchildren, Malana Chapman, Miles Chapman and Kahekili Spears; brothers, Wayne Wong, Dale Grizzard and Carl Grizzard; three sisters, Aisley Daniels, Lorna Wong and Christina Wong and a number of nieces and nephews.

Edward C. Velvin, Jr., 78, passed away Wednesday, February 17, 2021. He served his country as a member of the National Guard and retired from the Army Reserve and also retired from the U.S. Postal Service. He was a longtime member of Greensville Volunteer Fire Department as well as Greensville Volunteer Rescue Squad. He was a longtime member of Adams Grove Baptist Church where he served in many capacities.

Mr. Velvin is survived by his wife, Sally G. Velvin; son Chris Velvin (Audrey); daughter, Carol Grizzard (Carl); six grandchildren, Brandon Grizzard (Samantha), David Grizzard (JoJo), Megan Wilson (Josh), Chris Velvin, Jr., Dawn Hibbard and Brooke Velvin; 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Jean Joyner, Mary Pinner; a brother, Bobby Velvin and a number of nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held graveside 11 a.m. Saturday, February 20 at Greensville Memorial Cemetery.

Earldean Allen, 81, of Emporia, passed away Tuesday, February 9, 2021 in a local hospital after a brief battle with complications of Covid-19.

She was born April 22, 1939 to John and Gladys Nowell Newsome in Halifax County, NC. Earldean was married to Sonny Allen and worked as a textile worker. She loved the Lord and was a faithful member of Fountain Grove Baptist Church in Emporia attending regularly as long as her health permitted. She loved her little dog, Lilly, gardening, sewing, hummingbirds, baseball and helping others. She was a loving sister, wife, mother, aunt and grandmother. Her family was the center of her world and she was a friend that will be truly missed.

Earldean was preceded in death by her grandparents, James and Floy Nowell; her parents and her husband of 48 years; her sister, Elaine; stepdaughter, Teresa and stepson, Thomas Allen.

She is survived by her daughter, Melissa Allen of Emporia; brother, Haywood Nelson of Halifax, NC; aunt, Myrtle Nowell of Weldon, NC; stepdaughter, Wanda of Pennsylvania; son-in-law, Thomas Edward Allen of Emporia; sisters-in-law, Dorothy, Rosa, and Jean. all of Emporia; and numerous nieces, nephews; great-nieces and nephews; cousins, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life service will be held graveside 2 p.m. Saturday, February 20 at Independence United Methodist Church Cemetery on Independence Church Rd, Emporia, Virginia officiated by Pastor Tom Spizzirri. Due to circumstances of the pandemic, masks and social distancing will be followed.

Kandy Bryant Poarch

May 30, 1973-February 7, 2021

Kandy Bryant Poarch, 47, of Pleasant Shade in Emporia, Virginia, passed away Sunday, February 7, 2021. Kandy graduated from Greensville Co. High School, where she also began her education to become an LPN. She later became a RN and obtained her Master’s Degree in Nursing. Kandy has worked locally for over 25 years as a nurse at GMH, SVRMC, and presently served as Director of Nursing of Accordius Health at Emporia. Kandy was a dedicated nurse and is well known for her compassion for others and her patients.

Kandy is preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Byron and Betty Dunn; paternal grandparents, Robert and Pattie Bryant; and father-in-law, Randolph Poarch.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Ron Poarch; daughter, Shirlkay Poarch; son, Bryant Poarch; loving dog, Elvis; parents, Edward and Kay Bryant; brother, Frankie Bryant (Tonya); brother-in-law, Brian Poarch (Mary Beth); mother-in-law, Shirley Poarch; nieces, Sarah Poarch, Jane Poarch, and Natalie Bryant; and nephew, Nikolas Bryant.

A private funeral service will be held on Thursday, February 11, 2021, with private interment at Emporia Cemetery.

Mabel Lewis Gillam, 89, of Jarratt, passed away Sunday, February 7, 2021. She was preceded in death by her husband, James and son, David.

Mrs. Gillam is survived by two sons, Wayne (Connie) and Curtis (Susan) and three daughters, Dianne, Judy (Lynwood) and Martha (Jim); one granddaughter; three grandsons; six great-grandchildren and two sisters, Frances Leonard and Nancy Castellow.

Betty Little Delbridge

Betty Little Delbridge, 79, went peacefully to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 30, 2021. Betty was born on April 9, 1942 and was raised in Pleasant Hill, NC and later moved to Emporia, Virginia, married and raised a family.

Betty loved her career as secretary of the Greensville County Public Schools Elementary School where she was devoted to teachers, parents and children. She retired on June 30, 2007 after 25 years service.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Jarman Delbridge; her parents, Jesse Lee and Dora Webb Little; two sisters, Irene Turner and Mildred Pettway; four brothers, Dean Little, Harward Little, Joe Little and Lewis Little.

She is survived by a son, Walter ‘Jack” Deldridge (Melissa); daughter, Betty Jo Ridout (Ray); six grandchildren, Hunter Delbridge (Taylor), Mackenzie Delbridge, Jacob Gwaltney, Samantha Delbrdige, Emily Ridout and Ethan Ridout; a great-grandson, Mason Lee Delbridge, all of Emporia; two sisters, Rebecca Edwards and Verla Rainey (Edward) and a special niece, Sharon Simmons (Charles).

Otis B. Chaffin

Otis B. Chaffin passed away at the age of 86 on Tuesday, January 12, 2021. Otis was born on March 3, 1934, in Mississippi. He was a retiree of the Georgia-Pacific plant in Emporia, Virginia. 

Otis is survived by his wife of 39 years, Frances Mitchell Chaffin; daughter Sylvia Chaffin; son, Earl Chaffin; step-daughters, Debra M. Roach (Wayne) and Brenda M. Rieley (Jerry); two grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; one great-grandchild and four step-great-grandchildren. 

A private graveside funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 16 at Greensville Memorial Cemetery officiated by The Reverend Tom Williams of Adams Grove Baptist Church.
