JESSICA Nicole Davis, 19, passed away on January 6, 2021. She was preceded in death by her mother, Kay Gordon Davis. She is survived by her father, Roy Michael Davis and step mom, Tina B. Davis of Capron, VA., maternal grandparents, Linwood Gordon and Daisy Mae Gordon of Emporia VA., step-grandmother, Marlene Holland of Capron, VA., brothers, Jeffrey M. Davis and Joshua M. Davis of Emporia, VA., step brother, Cody J. Henderson of Capron, VA., step sister, Shana Lambert of Franklin, VA., along with numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles. Jessica graduated from Greensville County High School.

A private graveside service will be held, at Greensville Memorial Cemetery with Rev. John Kinsey officiating.

A public memorial service will be held at a later date.

Jerry Andrew Earnhardt

Jerry Andrew Earnhardt 71, passed away at his home on January 15, 2021.  He was preceded in death by his parents Marvin Earnhardt and Louise Earnhardt, one sister Shirley McIntire and two grandchildren Whitney Nicole Gaultney and Aubree Curry.  He is survived by is loving wife Patricia P. Earnhardt, two sons Tommy Gaultney (Jennifer) of Emporia, VA, James David Earnhardt (Gretchen) of Salsbury, NC , three daughters Angela Earnhardt of Kinopalas, NC, Crystal Mureno (Roberto) of South Hill, VA and Michelle Cifers (Frankie) of Emporia, VA. One niece Melissa Miller (Tod) of Salsbury NC.

Also, 16 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.  He worked as an electrician for many years.

Otis B. Chaffin

March 3, 1934 - January 12, 2021

Otis B. Chaffin passed away at the age of 86 on Tuesday, January 12, 2021. Otis was born on March 3, 1934, in Mississippi. He was a retiree of the Georgia-Pacific plant in Emporia, Virginia. 

Otis is survived by his wife of 39 years, Frances Mitchell Chaffin; daughter Sylvia Chaffin; son, Earl Chaffin; step-daughters, Debra M. Roach (Wayne) and Brenda M. Rieley (Jerry); two grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; one great-grandchild and four step-great-grandchildren. 

A private graveside funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 16 at Greensville Memorial Cemetery officiated by The Reverend Tom Williams of Adams Grove Baptist Church.

Maggie Lane Ligon, 43, passed away peacefully at home on January 5, 2021. She is survived by two sons, Mother Joan Ligon, Father Ray Ligon, Grandmother Bernice Ligon, Sister Cindy Fox, Brothers Lonnie Ligon and David Maitland, five nephews and one neice. She was dearly loved by family and friends.

Charles I. “Billy Gene” Gregory, Sr.

Charles I. “Billy Gene” Gregory, Sr., 85, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 6, 2021.

He loved his Lord, his family, his church, and his community and served each one well.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Betty M. Gregory; his children, Donna Gregory, Tammy Gregory Kidd (Garry), and Charles I. (Chuck) Gregory, Jr. (Kim); his grandchildren, Stacy Hardester (Drew), Mark Ferguson (Amanda), Samantha Thomas (Dustin), Charles I. Gregory, III and Claire Gregory; his great-grandchildren, Katie and Darby Hardester, Easton and Gunner Thomas; his step-grandchildren, Megan K. Deal (John), Lovie E. Kidd and his step-great-grandchildren, Ari, Knox and Everlie Deal, Tyler Thompson and Eli Thomas and two sisters, Sandra Comer and Dama Jones.

Billy was a member of the National Guard and a Scoutmaster for many years. He was a member of the Jarratt Volunteer Fire Department and an honorary member until the day of his death. He was a deacon in his church and a member of Jarratt Town Council for many years. Billy retired after 44 years with Georgia-Pacific Corporation as the boiler house supervisor.

A private graveside service is planned.

Charles Ruffin Sykes, 92, passed away on December 7, 2020. He was the husband of Betty Brantley Sykes. He was the son of the late Garland Reid Sykes and Annie Lou Marshbourne Sykes. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, J.G. Sykes, Alvin Johnson Sykes, sisters, Alice Edwards, Julie Sykes Upchurch, Pauline Sykes. He is survived by his daughters, Debra Day (Jimmy) of Emporia, VA., Gail Kansler (Mike) of Raleigh, NC., brother, Everett Sykes (Sallie Ann) of Reidsville, NC., along with two grandchildren, Jamie Poythress (Jason) of Emporia, VA., Alexandra Kansler of Raleigh, NC. Charles was a longtime member of Calvary Baptist Church. He worked for many years in HVAC and Plumbing Supplies business but his true love was farming, gardening, and sharing his produce with his neighbors. He was a man of integrity, character, and strong work ethics.

Charles and Betty were married for 67 years and are now together in their heavenly home.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, January 4, 2021, for Charles and Betty Sykes, at Hollywood Cemetery, Middlesex, NC., at 11:00 A.M.

Betty Brantley Sykes, 87, passed away on December 12, 2020. She was the daughter of the late Bernice Marvin Brantley and Lona Murray Brantley. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Charles Ruffin Sykes, sisters, Dorothy Brantley Kemp, Geraldine Brantley, brothers, John Brantley, Pete Brantley. She is survived by her daughters, Debra Day (Jimmy) of Emporia, VA., Gail Kansler (Mike) of Raleigh, NC., sister-in-law, Bertie Mae Brantley of Middlesex, NC., two grandchildren, Jamie Poythress (Jason) of Emporia, VA., Alexandra Kansler of Raleigh, NC. Betty was a longtime Member at Calvary Baptist Church. She had a long and distinguished career in Banking and her most cherished role in life was being a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.

Betty and Charles were married for 67 years and are now together in their heavenly home.

William Lee Carter took his earthly rest to begin his heavenly life in God’s infinite wisdom on December 9, 2020. William Lee Carter was born November 13, 1929 as he turned 91 years young. William L. Carter was the fourth child of 13 children to the late Herbert Lee and Alsie Jordan Carter in Southampton County, Virginia. 

At an early age, William Lee joined the Jerusalem Baptist Church in Jarratt, VA. William Lee loved God and often quoted scriptures or a favorite song. William Lee attended the public schools in Sussex, VA. At the age of seventeen, William Lee left Virginia and moved north to Plainfield, New Jersey, where he worked as a machinist. During this time, in 1966,  William Lee met and married the love of his life Mary Edna Burts formerly of Greenville, SC.

In 1992, William Lee and Mary Edna left New Jersey to build a home in Emporia, Virginia, on a portion of land formerly owned by his father, Herbert L. Carter. They had a relaxing life of farming, family and fellowship.

William Lee was a loving and dedicated husband, brother, father, uncle, cousin, grandfather and friend. William Lee was a man of quiet strength and integrity. William Lee was a genuine person with a heart to help his fellow man. William Lee’s compassion, kindness and generosity was extended to all he encountered. William Lee was a simple man who enjoyed peace, encouraging young people and supporting his community.

William Lee was preceded in death by: his parents, Herbert L. & Alsie Carter; daughter, Celestine Carter and siblings, Clarence Carter, Ruby Maryland, Willie Carter, Joseph Carter, Susie Moore, George Carter, Albert Carter and Fannie Parham. 

Cherishing his memory is: his wife of 53 years Mary Edna Carter;  four children, Deborah Ferguson (Anthony) of Maryland, Cornell Brown (Laverne) of Hopewell, VA, Faye Hines of Emporia, VA and Darin Hester (Wanda) of New Jersey; eleven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; his siblings, Carroll Carter (Clara) of Emporia, VA, Shirley Powell (George) of Hampton, VA, Margaret Robinson of Emporia, VA and Richard Carter (Christine) of Jamesburg, NJ, sisters and brothers-in-law, Susie Carter (Clarence-deceased) of Emporia, VA, Milton Burts, Douglas Burts and Evelyn Burts all of Greenville, SC; close cousin, Reginald Carter;  a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Norma Jones Vacca

Norma Jones Vacca, 88, passed away on Wednesday, December 9, 2020 at her home. She was the daughter of the late Gerald Jones and Grace Starkey Jones and was a longtime member of St. Richard’s Catholic Church. Mrs. Vacca was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Daniel Vacca. She is survived by her two daughters, Gay Little, Christy Suttles (Don), two sons, Danny Vacca (Ann), Steven Vacca (Lu), two brothers, Keith Jones (Marie), Jerry Jones (Jean), along with seven grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, along with two great-great grandchildren. Timothy “Tim” Sparrow

April 14, 1969-November 30, 2020

Mr. Timothy Paul Sparrow, age 51, a resident of Emporia, VA and a former resident of Beaufort County died Monday November 30, 2020.

A private graveside service will be held for the family officiated by Pastor Shad Watters.  Pallbearers will be Kelly, Everett, Gary Chrismon, Brad Smith Daniel Lewis Jeremy Surratt and Tony L. Whitlock.  Honorary pallbearers will be Redwine International VA family.  A public visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sunday December 6, 2020 at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory of Washington.

Tim was born in Beaufort County on March 14, 1969, son of the late Jacob Cedric Sparrow and the late Carol Faye Waters Sparrow.  He was a graduate of Bath High School and continued his education at Beaufort County Community College.  He was a service and parts manager with Redwine International in Emporia.  Tim attended First Presbyterian Church of Emporia.  His hobbies included watching Dallas Cowboys football, attending theme parks, riding rollercoasters, and watching NASCAR racing.  His love of NASCAR prompted him to pursue and fulfill his dream of driving Richard Petty’s car.

Survivors include his stepchildren: Kelsey N Whitlock, Hillary M. Whitlock who affectionately called him Paw Paw; a niece: Rhesa Jo Walston (Ryan) of Chocowinity; a nephew: Cameron David Sparrow of Chocowinity; a great niece: Breelyn Walston of Chocowinity; a sister-in-law: Michelle Brown of Washington;    a grandchild: Adelaide Britt; a special friend Nora Lynch Smith and numerous cousins.  Tim was predeceased along with his parents by his special parents: Hubert and Helen Johnson, a sister: Elisabeth C. Sparrow and a brother: David M. Sparrow.

William Sherrod “Billy” Harris, Jr., 82 of Emporia, VA, departed from his earthly life on Tuesdday, December 1, 2020 to enter his Heavenly home for eternity. 

Billy was transported by his fellow squad members to the local hospital on November 14th and was then transported to Southside Regional Medical Center, in Petersburg, where he was diagnosed with pneumonia.  He fought to survive, but succumbed to his illness and went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

He was the son of the late William Sherrod and Elva Everette Harris.  He was their only child. 

He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Martha Allen Harris, their daughter Sherron Lane Harris Talbott (Michael), and two grandsons, Edward Grant and William Cole Bradley.

Billy was a graduate of Greensville County High School.  He attended East Carolina University, where he was a member of Theta Chi fraternity.  He then transferred to Campbell University where he graduated in 1965. 

He was a lifelong member of Monumental United Methodist Church, where he served as a Sunday School Teacher, a Lay Speaker and as the Chairman of the Administrative Board.

He began his career with the City of Emporia as Deputy Treasurer in 1967, and was then elected Treasurer in November 1969. He served as Treasurer until the time of death. 

He was one of the original 33 Founding Members of the Greensville Volunteer Rescue Squad in 1963, where he continued to proudly and unselfishly serve his community for 57 years, serving 35 of those years as President.  During his years with the Rescue Squad he served as a mentor, leader, teacher and friend to all of its members.  In 1978 he was certified with the Commonwealth of Virginia, Department of Health as an EMT Instructor and was awarded Life Membership to the Squad in 1978.  He was also a Governor’s Award nominee from the Office of EMS.

During his lifetime, he served as President of the Local Rotary Club, where he was recognized by the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International, and he also served as President of the Emporia Jaycees, where he was recognized with the National Distinguished Service Award.  He was later honored and proud when he received the Eugene H. Bloom Lifetime Achievement Award which he was presented by the Emporia Greensville Chamber of Commerce in recognition of his leadership, professionalism and eagerness to serve his community, as well as being a living example to others.  In addition, he was also awarded the 2013 Hometown Heroes Award by Allen and Allen Law Firm. 

He also received the Community Hero Award from Virginia Tech and Virginia State University through the Virginia Cooperative Extension. 

Billy will be remembered for his love for his family, his love for serving the Greensville Volunteer Rescue Squad, his love for Monumental United Methodist Church, and his tireless and unending love for his local community.

A funeral service will be held at Calvary Baptist Church at 2:00 P.M. on Sunday, December 6, 2020 with Rev. Rick Franklin and Rev. Jerry Wicker officiating. Masks will be required for those attending the funeral service. The service will be broadcast on FM 90.7 while in the church parking lot.

Bernard Hooker Blake, 89, died Monday, November 30, 2020.

The son of the late Henry Turner Blake Sr. and Ruby Dickerson Blake, Hooker was also preceded in death by a brother, Henry Turner “Pinkie” Blake Jr. and a sister, Alice Blake Eason. A United States Army Korean War Veteran, he was a lifetime Member of Monumental United Methodist Church, a founding member of the Gravel Pit Hunt Club, and the former owner of B.H. Blake Well Boring and Septic Company.

Hooker is survived by his daughters; Becky Blake Gayle, Penny Sue Blake of Virginia Beach, Theresa Blake Vick and her husband Melvin, Bonnie Blake Gibson and her husband Pete of Youngsville, NC, grandchildren; Jennifer Gayle, Brandi Partridge, Amy Bain, Kevin Allen, Nicholas Allen, Blake Gibson, seven great grandchildren and four adoring nieces.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Friday, December 4, 2020 at Monumental United Methodist Church with Rev. Rick Franklin and Rev. Jerry Wicker officiating. Burial will follow at Greensville Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends after the Graveside at the Cemetery.

Thomas Benjamin “Ben” Mitchell, 89, passed away on November 15, 2020 at Southern Virginia Regional Medical Center. He was the vice president of Sadler Brothers Oil Company for many years. He also served in the Army during the Korean War. He was the son of the late, Clarence Wilson Mitchell and Daisy Daniel Mitchell.

He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Clarence W. Mitchell, Jr., William R. Mitchell, Horace Mitchell, sisters, Virginia Mitchell Hobbs, Mary Mitchell Norwood, Lillian High, Daisy Edwards, Jane Rodgester Mitchell.

Brian Norwood, 56, of Jarratt, passed away Friday, November 13, 2020. He was the son of the late Monk and Shirley Norwood and was also preceded in death by two brothers, Buz and Ronnie.

Brian is survived by a sister, Connie Norwood Mckinney (Roger); nieces, Dawn Jones (Coby), Faith Ash (Darrel) and Hannah Godwin (David); nephew, John Mckinney (Chelsea) and several great nieces and nephews. He also is survived by his friend and former wife, Lisa Hammer and his faithful canine companion, Buster.

Richard Jarratt Lee, a local attorney residing in North Chesterfield, VA, passed away on Saturday, October 31, 2020. He was born on February 20, 1943, and raised in Emporia, VA, where he graduated from Greensville County High School. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Upper Iowa University in 1979; and in 1981 he received a Master of Arts degree in Legal Studies from Antioch University.

Richard was he third son of the late Ruth Lee and Thomas E. Lee, Sr. He was preceded in death by his two older brothers, George and Tom. He is Survived by his wife Patricia Wiggins Lee, one son Raymond Mark Lee and his wife Melanie; his younger brother Bobby and his wife Denise. He is the proud Papa of three grandchildren, Kanyon, Tyler and Taylor Lee. He is also survived by nieces Kathy Queen, Becky Lee, Marti Scott, Ginger Coletrane, Tiffany Lee and Cristen Lee.

James A. Vincent, Sr., passed away on September 26, 2020 at the Southern Virginia Regional Medical Center. He was born on November 9, 1940 in Emporia, VA., to the late Billy B. and Frances Somner Vincent. He was also predeceased by his wife, Gwen Francis Vincent, children, James A. Vincent, Jr., Jill Frances Vincent, Amanda Francis Emerson, brother, Ronald F. Vincent, nephew, Jason B. Vincent.

He was a graduate of Greensville County High School and attended Louisburg Junior College in Louisburg, NC. He farmed in Greensville County in a family farming operation with his father, Billy B. Vincent and brothers Ronald and Lindsey for many years. Later he operated Vincent Grocery in Skippers, VA., until he retired.

He is survived by his siblings, Billy B. Vincent, Jr., (Helen), Joan V. Herring (Jack), Lindsey S. Vincent (Scott), his beloved granddaughter, two grandsons, along with nephews, nieces, and cousins.

A graveside memorial service will be held at Corinth Cemetery in Skippers, VA., on Sunday, November 8, 2020, at 2:00 P.M. with Rev. Larry Grizzard officiating.

Charles Harvey Gleason

Charles Harvey Gleason, 75, passed away on October 29, 2020.  Charles was a retired Correctional Officer for the state of Virginia Department of Corrections and also served in the U.S. Navy.

He was the son of the late Perley Harvey Gleason and R. Marie Beeman Gleason. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother James D. Gleason, and daughter, Charlene A. Gleason.

He is survived by his wife, Lee Ann Gleason, daughters, Michele Whitby (Rodney), Rochelle Jenkins (Donald), sister, C. Jeanne Stanton (Allen), and sister-in-law Judith A. Gleason grandchildren, Twyla Campbell, Kyle Rook, great-grandchildren Savannah Rook, Kole Rook and several nieces and nephews.

Jane Mitchell Rodgester, 85, of Emporia, VA, departed this life on October 24, 2020. Jane was preceded in death by her husband of forty-three years, Rufus Rucker Rodgester, daughter, Kathy Ann Rodgester Lucy, great-grandson, Lyle Hayes Grizzard, four sisters, and three brothers. Jane is survived by her daughters, Connie R. Grizzard, Karen R. Watkins (Hardee), and Kimberly R. Edwards (Calvin); grandchildren, Ashley Lucy Wrenn (Dustin), Michael Lee Grizzard II (Kristen), Matthew Grizzard (Alison), and Dylan Edwards; great-grandchildren, Kellan Michael Grizzard, Violet Jane Grizzard, Alden Lee Grizzard, Linden Joah Grizzard and Emersyn Paige Wrenn; sister, Emma M. Powell and brother, Thomas B. Mitchell (Betty).

Jane was a life-long member of Independence United Methodist Church and was a devoted mother and grandmother.

Johnny C. “J.C.” Ogburn, 76, of Emporia, passed away Saturday, October 10, 2020. He was the son of the late Edward Thomas Ogburn and Willie Daniels and was also preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jean Ogburn; two brothers, Wibur “Bug” Ogburn and William “Man” Ogburn and two sisters, Virginia Pauline Prince and Ethel Knapp.

She was the daughter of the late Johnny Swanson and Lila Williams Doyle. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Wylie Edward Weaver; her brother, Johnny Swanson Doyle, Jr.; sisters-in-law, Jeannette M. Doyle, Shirley Doyle, Frances Doyle, Marie Doyle; and brother-in-law, T.J. Allen.

Phyllis is survived by her devoted husband of sixty years, Graham Weaver; son, Tim Weaver (Kim); grandchildren, Brad Weaver (Deb), Brooke Morefield (Corey); great-granddaughters, Blair Elmore and Peighton Weaver; sister, Judy Allen; brothers, Roy E. Doyle, William Neal Doyle, Tommy Gene Doyle.

Ann Kei Newsome, 92, passed away on October 9, 2020. She was born on April 26, 1928 to the late Vendel and Bessie M. Kei. Ann was preceded in death by her parents, Vendel and Bessie Kei, her husband, Russell C. “Spot” Newsome, along with her twelve brothers and sisters.

She is survived by her son, Lane Newsome (Mary Anne), grandsons, Russell Newsome, Sandy Newsome, great-grandsons, Chandler, Carter, Connor, along with numerous, loving nieces and nephews.

Ann worked at VA Dyeing and Finishing for twenty years until she began working with her husband. She was an avid golfer with a hole-in-one to her credit as well as being a wonderful cook known especially for her cakes and pies. She loved her family and was proud to be a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She spent the last five years being cared for at the Bloom Center, where she was given care by a special group that treated her with love and compassion.

Richard Elmo Clary, 92, Passed away Friday, October,2, 2020 where he was residing at Commonwealth (Leigh Hall) Assisted Living in Norfolk, Va. Richard was born March 11, 1928 in Brunswick County, VA.  He Served our Country in the Army during WWII and he retired from the State of Virginia ABC Board in 1993.

He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 58 years Louise Woodruff Carter Clary; his parents Richard B. Clary and Ocie Baird Clary; his son Larry Woodruff Carter; brother Wayne Clary and sister Tina Carpenter.

Richard is survived by his loving children Edward Wilson Carter and Linda Louise Carter Sandifer; Brother Woody Clary and sisters Elsie Chambliss, Betty Jones and Martha Ann Brewer Hitchcock.

Grandchildren Julie Carter Roberge Secura, Monica Sandifer Hart, Brian Eugene Sandifer, Andrea Carter Boutelle, Brandon Edward Carter and Cathy Sandifer Geddings.

William Thomas “Tommy” Jarratt, Sr., 74, passed away Saturday, October 3, 2020 at Southern Virginia Regional Medical Center.

Tommy was born May 21, 1946 in Emporia, Virginia. He worked for Georgia Pacific Corporation in Emporia, Virginia where he retired after thirty years of service. Tommy spent his spare time maintaining the grounds for the EGRA. Throughout his life and following retirement, he enjoyed working on vehicles in his shop.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Smith Jarratt; his parents, Waverly Richard Jarratt, Sr. and Fannie Wells Jarratt, and brothers Waverly Richard Jarratt, Jr., Edward Carol Jarratt, and Benjamin Jarratt.

Tommy is survived by his loving children; William T. Jarratt, Jr. “Timmy” (Lori), Stuart Craig Jarratt, and Trista Jarratt Clements (Robert); sister, Ginger Shackelford (James) of Urbanna, VA; grandchildren, Dustan T.
