Your Mission for this weekend,

should you choose to accept it:

The Riparian Woman’s Club is asking all residents and businesses in the City of Emporia and Greensville County to place a sign or picture of one of these three symbols on your door or window. The symbols are a Rainbow, Butterfly, or a Candle. These symbols all represent "hope."

We are asking the public to do this in support of our frontline workers and those families who have been affected by the coronavirus. We also wish to do this in support of each other.

So many people are suffering in so many different ways during this time of uncertainty and isolation. Hopefully, seeing these symbols will bring a smile to someone’s face. If so, then we have served our purpose well.

Email photos of your Symbols of Hope so that they may be shared with out of town readers who may need a pick-me-up from home...send them to

We're all in this together...

Celebration of Life

Person’s United Methodist Church

Drewyville VA

Maurice Andrew Person went to be with the Lord on August 13, in his home, surrounded by family.  Born in Capron, VA to Walter and Elsie Person, Mr. Person was the youngest of nine children. During the Great Depression, the family left Southampton County and moved to Portsmouth, VA where Mr. Person graduated from Cradock High School.  After graduation, Mr. Person went on to earn a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from the Norfolk Division of the College of William and Mary. After college graduation, Mr. Person was commissioned as an Engineering Officer where he was stationed at Lowery AFB, achieving the rank of Captain. After being honorably discharged, Mr. Person returned home and earned a Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.  Mr. Person then joined Hampton Roads Sanitation District where his work and expertise led him to become the Director of Engineering culminating with forty years of service. In his spare time, Mr. Person was an avid golfer and spent enjoyable time with the many dogs he adopted over the years. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Barbara Jean, daughter Wendy (Neal) Porter, grandchildren, Noah and Brooke, Brother-in-Law Eddie Creekmore, Nephew Mark Person, Niece Gina (Chip) Artz and a host of other nieces and nephews. Mr. Person always loved his annual family reunions, therefore a celebration of life will be held at the upcoming family reunion to be held at Person’s Church, in Drewyville VA, on September 15th at 9:45am.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Persons UMC attn.: Mark Person, Treasure. P.O. Box 14121 Richmond, VA 23225, in memory of Maurice Person.
