Ms. Barbara Kelly Stephenson of Emporia Virginia passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, July 26, 2019 at the age of 75. She was preceded in death by her mother, Virginia Holland Stephenson, and father, Robert Kelly Stephenson. Ms. Stephenson is survived by her special friends, Connie and Danny Johnson, Bernice Harris, as well as three loving cats, Callie, Tiger, and Maltie. Ms. Stephenson was salutatorian of her graduating class at Greensville County High School and a graduate of William and Mary. She received her Masters at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and took classes at the University of Tennessee. She was the Librarian at Brunswick Academy for numerous years and then later retired from the Brunswick Virginia Department of Corrections. She was a Member of the Riparian Women’s Club and also their garden club.

A visitation will be held at Echols Funeral Home, Monday, July 29, 2019 from 6:00 P.M. to 7:30 P.M. A graveside service will be held at Greensville Memorial Cemetery at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday July 30, 2019.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Emporia Animal shelter of Emporia Humane Society.

Moses Clements VT Scholarship Dinner

The Emporia Hokie Club and Alumni Chapter will be having its annual scholarship dinner on Sunday, July 28th at the Golden Leaf Commons.  The Scholarship Program has been named for beloved local Hokie, Moses Clements, in memory for his dedicated work for years with the local scholarship program.

Over the last 20+ years, the Emporia Chapter has provided over $40,000 in scholarships to local students starting their college experience at Virginia Tech. Every year, local students will receive a $500 scholarship. Our chapter is so proud to present these scholarships on July 28th.

As a guest speaker for the evening Virginia Tech announcer, Mike Burnop, will give an update on the upcoming football season in Blacksburg.  Mike is a Hall of Fame tight end at Virginia Tech.  His insight directly from practices at Virginia Tech will be highly anticipated. The kickoff of the ACC network will also be discussed

The agenda for the evening will start with a Happy Hour at 5:30, Dinner at 6:30 followed by our scholarship presentations from Katie Richardson, scholarship chairman. The evening will conclude with an inside look at the 2019 Virginia Tech football program with Mike Burnop.  Golden Leaf Commons is located at 1300 Greensville County Circle, Highway 301 North, Emporia, Virginia 23947.

The cost of the dinner is $30 per person.
